Why Create an Informative Class about Yoga for Everyone?
Allow me to answer this recent question.
I was asked why I created and wrote a course about the science of yoga for everyone. To begin with, I’ve been training yoga teachers since 2017. Over the course of the 8 years I’ve been doing this, in addition to all the teaching of yoga classes I do regularly, I have found that there are a great many people who know there is more to yoga than the asana ( pose practice) we do in the studio. And there is MUCH more to it. I regularly get questions about yoga philosophy, Pranayama ( breathing techniques), meditation, and other yoga-related topics.
I’ve had people take a 200-hour yoga teacher training with zero intentions of ever teaching a yoga class. But they felt they had no other options to find out more. There are books that can be read; there are specialized workshops someone can take if they know which ones are worth reading or if they are available to take the workshop when it’s offered. But again, it lacks a structure someone finds in training that offers information on a broad range of yoga topics. And there’s someone available to answer any subsequent questions someone may have, too. In the West, we don’t function with the guru/student structure, but there is value in having someone available to guide you and answer your questions as they come up and as you learn more about yoga.
So I sat down with everything we cover in our 200-hour training, which the Yoga Alliance has called “comprehensive,” and pulled out the key topics in each, took away all the stuff that a person not interested in teaching doesn’t need, i.e., cueing, adjusting and whatnot, and realized there was plenty of information to put a course together for the layman, the student who just wants to better understand what yoga is all about. So Just Breathe 50 was born. There’s no practicing teaching, no homework, no learning how to sequence a class, no tests, and no practicals either. I made it a relaxed, informal, and informative class. This class is supposed to make those who take it better yoga students with a broader understanding of the science we call yoga. I included the essentials and fundamentals of approximately 36 poses to help those taking the class discover how to best do the most common poses. This is not so they can teach it to others, but when they need “help” in class, they know they can do the pose better using a prop or make the necessary adjustments for themselves.
Why Just Breathe 50? No, it’s not 50 hours. First of all, it’s approximately a quarter of what the 200-hour trainees cover. Hence 50. It’s that simple.
So, if you know there is more to yoga than asana, if you are curious and want to know more about the topics we cover, such as philosophy, meditation, pranayama, chakras, Ayurveda, and more, then this course was created for you. My next class begins in one week ( March 26th) and is hybrid, so those taking it can attend it in person or virtually. It includes 7 Wednesdays from 6-8 pm and 3 Saturdays from 1-3 pm from Next Wednesday through June. The cost includes all materials as well.
